Mainstream views dominating psychotherapy do not offer support for a depth-focused psychotherapists. Financially dominated diagnostic empires largely influence mainstream psychotherapy. Cognitive behavioral approach tends to rely on empirical approaches to behaviorism in order to understand individual behavior. One major error in empirically dominated focus of psychotherapy is the notion that all mental and emotional illnesses are treatable by the Diagnostic Statistic Manual (DSM). Depth-focused psychotherapy can help shine a light where imperial evidence is afraid to venture.
It is not to say that any one method to support a patient is preferred over any other. It is to say having experienced my own perpetual shame from a therapist who was not confident in his approach, forced my withdraw from therapy. A therapists disposition hinges on his or her theoretical orientation. To support a patient through depth-focused psychotherapy is to see the person as an autonomous being who is capable of making decisions in life. Embracing this notion tightly allows any one person the freedom and respect to be seen as a courageous person. Hence they are seen as being capable of influencing his or her mental health.
How a depth-focused psychotherapy approach can help with many struggles.
A wide range of ailments come through the door of a psychotherapist. Depression, anxiety, life struggles, marriage difficulty, and relationship disconnection are among a few of the most common. A common thread that weaves the tapestry of mental illness together is suffering. Suffering is an individual affair. Just because there are common occurences of individual suffering, does not mean that empirically dominated approaches that support suffering will be the preferred method. It can also be argued that trying to fit a patient into a mainstream paradigm is far more dangerous than the ailment they brought through the door.
In my efforts to help ease the suffering of patients, I rely on the patient’s use of images and dreams. Additionally, it is paramount to understanding who I am sitting with and what is being brought forth. In many instances, patients desire to have a therapist provide the answers to why they are suffering. A depth-psychotherapist helps bring meaning and experiences to any one image that might arise. Dream images lose their meaning once empirical evidence interprets the image. Consequently, a belief held by depth-focused psychotherapists is to help a patient explore the emotional connection of dream images.
Life changes are sensitive, therefore a depth-focused psychotherapy approach can be validation.
Evidenced based empirical approaches cannot answer questions such as “Do I leave my partner” or “Should I leave my job?” Depth-focused psychotherapy offers a deeper understanding of unconscious intentions behind questions like this. Lives cannot be measured against one or the other. This invalidates the journey one has experienced thus far. Changes become fearful and overwhelming when rejected, repressed, or ignored. As we begin to understand the association to images and dreams, we tend to that which ails an individual. To honor the fear in the overwhelming situation of dramatic life changes honors the beauty of what it means to be a human. This is especially relevant when considering significant life changes.
Images and dreams help an individual psyche understand messages from the unconscious. Often when life offers changes and situations where life seems unbearable, messages are coming in. Messages that help inform one’s needs in a particular situation and offering the strength to overcome. For example, images of death in dreams spark concern and fear in many, many people. Yet, in this image, there is hope. To cease to exist is to die. This can be a literal concept in one’s life. Dream images can present unconscious material such as struggling. In situations that create, let’s say, anxiety and requires one to tend to, then death can come in the form of a killing off through images and dreams.
Personal Dream Image.
I once had a reoccurring dream image, which left me terrified. A large black, shadowy figure was placing his hands around my neck. The pressure was so intense, I woke in terror. Yep, this rattled me to my core. I explored the images with my personal therapist. Together, we explored my hesitation in using my voice in my marriage. Where am I suffocating myself? In working with the dream image, I could pull back the vail of the black figure. I revealed I was choking myself, resisting my voice, and living with the inability to speak. Furthermore, sharing this image with a therapist helped me to conceptualize what needs were beginning to surface. The good news is there is a lot of support out there to strengthen your psyche.
