Gestalt Therapy in Wheat Ridge, CO
Have you ever felt as if you had something lingering around, but you can’t quite put your finger on it? Maybe this thing feels unfinished or perhaps you keep finding yourself spinning in circles trying to navigate a relationship or a major decision in life? Maybe you even call it ‘adulting.’ This is actually far more common than you may think. Often in life, we are faced with decisions that we often refuse to answer. This can leave you feeling isolated and confused for much of the journey.
What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is a modality in which one is offered the ability to tune into the here and now of life. Often in life, it becomes easier to allow all of life’s ailments to be lumped into one, rather than to give proper attention to the dominating need. It is an innate human ability to catastrophize, leaving one to worry about all the things! Fortunately, you can eliminate the worry and stress and anxiety with the support of a professional. Next thing you know, you’ll be adulting better than your parents.
What’s more important is gestalt therapy is also a way of life. When one enters into therapy with a gestaltist, they enter into a new way of seeing many of life’s dynamics. One thing is for sure no matter what generation you come from, sometimes it feels as if we’re left at the threshold of adulthood and forced to engage alone. In gestalt therapy, we emphasize choice rather than relying on habit. Rather than believing the mantra, ‘Adulting is for millennials who cannot function in society’, using gestalt therapy principles of awareness, we ask, ‘how do you want to function in society?’ No matter your age, if you learn the skill of enhancing choice into your life, you’ll live a much happier and more fulfilling life.
What to expect in gestalt therapy.
With so many alternative healing methods out there to help us navigate life’s stressors, and anxious confrontations around just about every corner, how are we to know who or what way is best for healing? When adulting, you are the best judge of character for your life. Let’s face it, you’ve come this far. Your parents might have helped instill great values in you, but now it’s your turn to begin the journey of harnessing your personal values. The support offered through gestalt therapy will bring awareness to your strengths, all the while, giving reverence to the choices in life that keep you stagnant. Let’s be honest now, no one engages in the act of adulting alone.
My personal journey through therapy, and still continued growth, has informed who I am as a person and as a therapist. It’s the notion of living a gestalt lifestyle I illuminated earlier. To support someone in gestalt therapy is to see the person as an autonomous being who is capable of making decisions in life. Embracing this notion tightly allows any one person the freedom and respect to be seen as a courageous person. Hence they are seen as being capable of influencing his or her mental health.
How a depth-focused psychotherapy approach can help with many struggles.
A wide range of ailments come through the door of a psychotherapist. Adulting, depression, anxiety, life struggles, marriage difficulty, and relationship disconnection are among a few of the most common. A common thread that weaves the tapestry of mental illness together is suffering. Suffering is an individual affair. Just because there are common occurrences of individual suffering, does not mean that popular approaches that support suffering will be the preferred method. It can also be argued that trying to fit a patient into a mainstream paradigm is far more dangerous than the ailment they brought through the door.
In my efforts to help support growth after much of the suffering clients often report, I rely on being able to help the individual tune into the here-and-now of everyday life.
Where do life’s answers come from anyway?
All too often, I find far more people think they have the answers to all of life’s problems, rather than actually having the answers. Evidenced-based empirical approaches cannot answer questions such as “Do I leave my partner” or “Should I leave my job” or even, “Why the hell is adulting so damn hard!” Gestalt therapy offers a clearer picture of what holds us back, in regard to questions like this. Lives cannot be measured against one or the other. Family norms need to be challenged to live healthier lives. Changes become fearful and overwhelming when rejected, repressed, or ignored. As we begin to understand how we’ve ingested our cultural upbringings to a detrimental level, we begin to see the freedom of life and deepen our understanding that adulting is probably much easier than we anticipated. To honor the fear in the overwhelming situation of dramatic life changes honors the beauty of what it means to be a human. This is especially relevant when considering significant life changes.
